Melomakarona – Traditional Greek Christmas Honey Cookies

Traditional recipe from Pelion

For the cookies (melomakarona):

240ml sunflower oil

240ml olive oil

50gr brandy

160ml fresh orange juice

1tsp baking soda

200gr sugar

1 tsp clove

2 tsp cinnamon

Zest from 2 oranges

900gr flower

2 tsp baking powder

For the syrup:

400gr sugar

400ml water

400ml flower honey

½ lemon

1 walnut

For the cookies (melomakarona):

In a bowl, add the olive oil, the sunflower oil, the brandy, the cinnamon, the clove and the oranges zest. Add in the orange juice the baking soda, mix it well and put it in the mixture. In case you like your cookies to be crispy, first, we have to sieve the flour together with the baking powder and then add it slowly in to the mixture. Stir the mixture well until all the ingredients are mixed well so you have a soft and oily dough. Use your hands to make small balls by rolling the dough between your hands. Place the cookies in a baking pan until all your dough is finished. Bake your cookies in a pre-heated oven at 160oC for 25 min. When your cookies (melomakarona) are baked let them cool down.

For the syrup:

Add all the syrup’s ingredients in a casserole. From the moment they start boiling let them boil for 3min. Let the syrup cool down for 1 minute. Pour your syrup over your cookies. Let each side of your cookies in the syrup for 20 min. Sprinkle some walnut on top of your “melomakarona” and serve them in a platter.

Bon appetite!
